Root Canal Treatment
Root canal is a treatment to repair and save a badly damaged or infected tooth
instead of removing it. The term “root canal” comes from the cleaning of the canals
inside a tooth’s root.
A root canal procedure sounds scary, but with today’s technology, it’s typically
not a whole lot more different than having a deep filling. There’s little to no pain
because your dentist will use local anesthesia to numb your tooth and gums so
you’re comfortable during the procedure.
Steps of a root canal procedure
- Preparing the area. The dentist begins by numbing the area with local
anesthesia - Accessing and cleaning the roots. Next, the dentist drills through the tooth
to access the root canals and pulp chamber. - Shaping the canals with endodontic files(rotary endodontics)
- Filling the canals with gutta percha
- Filling to the access hole with GIC/Composite
- Healing and antibiotics medication
- Adding the crown.
The patient will no longer feel any pain in that tooth because the nerve tissue
has been removed, and the infection has been eliminated.
A dental crown after a root canal provides reinforcement to your tooth and
restores its health and functionality.
